Wrist Fractures

What are wrist fractures?

The wrist is made up of a collection of bones and joints. The bones of the wrist include the radius and ulna, and 8 small bones known as the carpal bones. A wrist fracture involves a break in any one of the wrist bones. Two of the most common wrist fractures are distal radius fractures and scaphoid fractures.

What causes wrist fractures?

Wrist fractures commonly occur through a fall on an outstretched hand. More severe fractures occur through car accidents, motor vehicle accidents or fall from a height. Patients with weaker bones such as osteoporosis tend to break their wrists more easily.

What are the signs and symptoms of wrist fractures

Common signs and symptoms of a broken wrist includes:

  • Swelling and bruising across the wrist, forearm and hand
  • Pain across the wrist
  • Difficulty moving the wrist
  • Wrist appear crooked or out of alignment in more severe breaks

How Hand Therapy can help with wrist fractures

Hand Therapy is important in the recovery of your injury. A Hand Therapist can apply a cast or thermoplastic splint to protect your fracture. After a period of immobilisation, you will be shown wrist movement and strengthening exercises. Your progress will be monitored to ensure you achieve full recovery, whether it’s returning to work, sport or your hobbies.

If you have surgery, a Hand Therapist is also involved in your care to ensure you achieve the best results.
