Trigger finger

What is trigger finger or trigger thumb?
Trigger finger occurs when the sheath or tendon of the finger is swollen. As a result, the tendon doesn’t move smoothly and gets caught when you try to bend or straighten the finger.

What causes trigger finger?
The cause of triggering isn’t always known. You are more likely to develop trigger finger if you have a history of diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, cout, heart failure, carpal tunnel syndrome or Dupuytren’s contracture.
What are the signs and symptoms of trigger finger?
Common signs and symptoms include:
- Swelling and pain of the affected finger or palm
- Visible lump across your palm
- Clicking or locking of the finger or thumb
- Unable to straighten the finger or thumb
How can Hand Therapy help with trigger finger?
A Hand Therapist can assess and diagnose if you have a trigger finger. Treatment includes splinting, massage, swelling control and movement exercises. If the clicking and locking doesn’t improve, they will refer you for a cortisone injection or to see a Hand Surgeon. In most instances trialling splinting and exercises will fix the problem, if diagnosed early.
If you have surgery, a Hand Therapist is also involved in your care to ensure you achieve the best results. The image below shows a custom splint made for patients with trigger finger.
