What is tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)?

Tennis elbow is an overuse injury of a group of forearm muscles. It commonly affects the Extensor Carpal Radialis Brevis tendon, but may also affect one of the other tendons that attach near this tendon.

What causes elbow pain?

Many patients who play tennis actually never experience tennis elbow. Tennis elbow pain is commonly caused by repetitive gripping and lifting. The most common age group to experience tennis elbow is 30-60 year olds, but it can also occur in the younger population.

What are the signs and symptoms of tennis elbow?

  • Pain on the outside of the elbow
  • Pain may radiate into the upper arm, middle and ring fingers
  • Aggravated with elbow straight or grasping onto larger objects
