Finger injury

What is a volar plate injury?
A volar plate injury is a tear of one of the finger ligaments. The ligament (volar plate ligament) can be torn on its own, or it can be associated with a fracture. You will notice pain, swelling and bruising of your finger. The finger joint may also be sitting in a bent position as it can be painful to straighten.

What is a mallet injury?
A mallet injury is an injury to the tendon on the back of your finger. The tendon is either torn or you have a break in the finger where the tendon is torn. You will notice that your finger is sitting in a bent position and it’s not able to straighten. Other signs and symptoms include pain at your fingertip, swelling or redness.
Why is treatment important for finger injuries?
If any finger injury is left untreated, it may lead to deformity of the finger and make it difficult to bend. A Hand Therapist will be able to assess what injury you have and make a custom-made splint to protect your injury. You will be guided through movement exercises when appropriate to ensure you achieve full recovery.
