More people than ever work on computers, engage in repetitive motions or use power tools for DIY home projects. This may cause carpal tunnel syndrome, which is compression of the median nerve that runs through the wrist.

What are the signs and symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome?

Signs and symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome may be different for everyone. These can include:

  • Pins and needles or numbness over the thumb, index finger, middle finger and ring finger (see diagram)

  • Burning or pain in the hand

  • Swelling across the palm or fingers

  • Weakness in the hand

  • Dropping objects frequently
